This popular bakery is the perfect place to stop on your way to Volcanoes National Park. The Punalu’u Bake Shop sits on four acres of tropical gardens, so it’s an ideal place for stretching your legs as you enjoy a warm, sugary malasada. And if you’re really looking for a hearty meal, relax on the lanai and order the fan favorite Shoyu pork and baked fish plate lunch from their restaurant menu.
Self-taught chef and owner Paul Cubio helms this tiny Hilo gem. Reservations are required, and make sure you’re punctual because there’s only a five-minute grace period before you lose your spot! The ingredients are almost entirely sourced from the nearby farmers market. Breakfast menu includes waffles, eggs Benedict, and bagels and lox.
A half-hour drive from Hilo, Pāhoa town hosts a great breakfast at Pele’s Kitchen from 7:30 a.m. to noon everyday. Alongside delicious scrambles, omelettes and other breakfast favorites, Pele’s Kitchen serves creative dishes using local ingredients. Ever had a coconut and mango blintz? What about a waffle with breadfruit? Wash it all down with some of their fresh juices.
Big portions, delicious pancakes and plenty of fresh, local ingredients make Hawaiian Style Cafe a destination in Hilo. Of course serving up “Hawaiian style” comfort food, you can get the best of Hilo breakfast with their volcano omelette or a kalua hash. Add a touch of sweetness with an ube milkshake. Or challenge yourself to get through a serving of pancakes — they might be the size of your head!
